Engineers and mechanics in race shops across the island are making last-minute preparations for tomorrow’s (Saturday) Floodlit Finale to Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc’s 2015 Championship. The 23-race programme at the St Philip facility will also include a demanding six-race double-header bringing the inaugural Summer Season of the Suzuki Challenge Series to a close.
Roger Mayers, who suffered a front differential failure in the Chefette / Sol / Digicel / DHL / Hankook / Illusion Graphics Focus while leading the opening race in the Seaboard Marine CMRC at Bushy Park Barbados six weeks ago, is among those determined to be ready. He reported on his Facebook page yesterday (Thursday): “Front diff back for De Focus compliments of DHL - will be all ready for this weekend night event at Bushy Park Barbados.”
Another casualty of the CMRC race weekend was Mark Maloney, whose team confirmed that the necessary parts had arrived in the island at the Briefing Meeting last evening, so engine work on the Digicel / Maloney Racing Team Mazda RX-3 could be completed. Mayers and Maloney will face Stuart Williams (Williams Equipment / Structural Systems / Alpen Bars Lotus Elise) and Doug Maloney (Paints Plus / Maloney Racing Team Audi A4 quattro) in the BPMSI’s top group, Williams Equipment SuperModified 2.
Sammy Cumberbatch has been working to source some steering components for the Williams Industries / Castrol / Hilti BMW M3, so that he can join the Williams Equipment SuperModified 1 grid, along with Justin Campbell (Hilton / Hunikom / Itstaboo.com
All of the BPMSI classes will race once in daylight, then twice under floodlights, while the Swift Cup and SR3 Cup will have three races each before and after nightfall. Racing starts at 12.00pm, with round five of the Suzuki Challenge Series; the third and final rounds of the Hilti Handicap Championship for bikes and cars will bring the curtain down on BPMSI’s first full season shortly before 10.00pm.
While much attention will given to the SuperModified races, the last lap in the battle for the Champion Driver title will focus the minds of Clubman 1 class-leader Jermin Pope (Honda Civic), who leads Quincy Jones (Modified Production 1 Toyota Starlet) by just four points, 173 to 169 points.
Practice for the BMPSI classes will start at 2.00pm, the Bikes followed by the car classes, then Qualifying will take a new form: Hot Lap Qualifying – competitors in Ionics Clubman 1 & 2, Recovery Modified Production 1 and the Swift Cup will leave the Pit Exit at intervals, complete one flying lap, then return to the Pits. The Bikers and competitors in Recovery Modified Production 2, SBRC SuperSport, Williams Equipment SuperModified and the SR3 Cup, will have an additional warm-up lap before their Hot Lap.
BPMSI Chairman Sean Maloney said: “We are all looking forward to ending the season on a high note. A lot of work has gone into planning the new format for this race meet, with the Hot Lap Qualifying, some changes in race lengths . . . and, of course, the night racing, which will be a completely new challenge for many of our competitors.”
Saturday, October 17 (gates and ticket booths open 12.00pm) – racing from 12.00pm – 10.00pm: General Admission Bds $15; Clubhouse (food and drink on sale) Bds $30; children 12 and under are free. Hilti 4 x 4 Hammer Zone vehicle pass Bds $25, plus General Admission pass for each occupant
