More than 50 events to be organised by the Barbados Motoring Federation’s (BMF) seven sporting Member Clubs are listed on the provisional 2020 motor sport calendar published today (November 29). The calendar is confirmed against a background of rising numbers of participants: approaching 500 competitors have seen action during 2019 in events run under permits issued by the BMF, up around 10 per cent year on year and including a welcome number of first-timers across the disciplines. The programme, which stretches from early February to the end of November, includes a number of regional and international events, attracting overseas visitors to the island. This year, more than 40 arrived from the wider Caribbean, a larger number than in 2018, thanks to the staging of the Caribbean Junior Karting Academy Trophy (CJKAT) at Bushy Park; in addition to the young karters, regional drivers competed in circuit racing, rallying, rallycross and rallysprints, while eight overseas competitors have cars based at island workshops to facilitate regular visits. The addition of more than 70 participants from as far afield as mainland Europe, New Zealand and the United States was a further reminder of the valuable role motor sport plays in the island’s important sports-tourism industry. Events on next year’s calendar which will bring overseas visitors include: Sol Rally Barbados and Flow King of the Hill, organised by the Barbados Rally Club (BRC); the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup and Williams Industries International Race Meet, both organised by Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI), along with a round of the Tropical Shipping Caribbean BimmaCup, which is co-ordinated by the Vaucluse Raceway Motor Sports Club (VRMSC). The domestic calendar lists a broad cross-section of motor sport disciplines, from grass-roots autocross, dexterity and karting events, through circuit racing and drag racing to off-road 4x4 navigational safaris, rallycross, rallysprints, special stage rallies and speed events. They are organised by the BMF’s seven sporting Member Clubs: the Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD); Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL); Barbados Karting Association (BKA); Barbados Rally Club (BRC); Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI); the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc (MCBI); the Vaucluse Raceway Motorsports Club (VRMSC). Editor’s note: affiliated to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), which rules the sport worldwide, the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) is the island’s governing body for motor sport; it also represents the interests of its Member Clubs in discussions with Government departments which facilitate the sport in the island, in particular the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, which permits road closures for an agreed number of events each year. Away from motor sport, the BMF affiliate which answers the FIA Mobility remit is the Barbados Automobile Association (BAA), which is an executive committee member of the Government’s Barbados Road Safety Council.
