Barbados will have its first opportunity this Friday to see in action the young footballers who recently brought pride to the nation by capturing a silver medal in the 2015 Los Angeles Special Olympics World Games. The athletes, from various special units, who combined to defeat Hong Kong and St.Vincent and the Grenadines, will rejoin their Barbadian teams to do battle in the Special Olympics Barbados National Games Football Championship at the National Sports Council Grounds in Blenheim.

The competition will have Special Olympics athletes from the Alma Parris School defending their senior division title against the Ann Hill School, the Challenor Creative Arts Training Centre and the Learning Centre. In the previous National Games Football Championship, the Alma Parris School swept both the senior and junior divisions.

The junior division competition this year will also feature teams from the Erdiston Special School, the Ann Hill School, the Charles F. Broome Special Unit and the Ellerton Primary School Annex, with the possible addition of a team from St. Matthews Primary School.

The public is invited to come out and cheer the athletes of international standing and their teammates at the free event, which kicks off at 8:30 am. The Football Championship is the final event of the year on the Special Olympics Barbados National Games calendar, which featured earlier annual championships in aquatics, athletics (track and field) and bocce. In addition, golf competitions, in preparation for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, were hosted by the Barbados Golf Club.
