All of Barbados is invited to National Stadium Tuesday, March 6 to share in the excitement of the Special Olympics National Games Track and Field Meet. The athletes have been training for an entire year for the opportunity to show what hard work and dedication can produce. In addition to participants from numerous special units across the country and independent athletes, spectators will see, in action, our own Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal winners from the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens, Greece. Their performances in the international competition, and those of their teammates in bocce and table tennis, were recently recognised by the National Sports Council, which presented all seven of the World Games medal winners with National Sports Awards.
The Track and Field Meet is the central event on the Special Olympics Annual National Games calendar. In the past weeks, championship tournaments have been held in aquatics, bocce and football, with the Cricket Tournament and the Junior Track and Field Meet coming later on the schedule. The Special Olympics Annual National Games give intellectually challenged individuals an opportunity to compete for medals and ribbons, but more importantly, the competitions build self-confidence and pride in the athletes who are eager to show their accomplishments.
Admission is free to the Special Olympics National Games Track and Field Meet and all events on the National Game schedule. From the lighting of the National Games Torch to the final relay race, the annual meet is an experience to be shared as the nation gives its support to the inclusion of the athletes into the sports community and wider society.
