The weekend provided some challenging wind for the international competitors at the Barbados Clay Target Association Range. Four Barbados athletes made it into the 8 person Trapshooting event Final including Justin St John with an impressive score of 116/125. He was followed closely by Richard Greenidge, Aiden Johnson, Tosh Jones and Rhett Watson. Great Britain shooters, Bill MacLennan, Mike Faux and Keith White made up the other finalist. The Sunday afternoon Trap- single shot- finals saw an upset in the qualifiers with Barbados junior athletes (both recent medalists at the Championship of the Americas in November in Lima Peru) surpassing the seniors. Tosh Jones BRB was crowned the champion followed by Aiden Johnson BRB and Keith White (GBR) in third.
In the Skeet event, long time competitor and Bajan Olympian Michael Maskell broke targets to his victory , followed closely by Bajan Olympian Michelle Elliot and Luke Hadeed, Trinidad and Tobago.
Geoff Browne, President of the Barbados Shooting Council says “The Invitational was a great success as a result of all the volunteers’ efforts. We showcased the improved shotgun facilities that will allow our athletes to train and progress and perform internationally and attract other competitors to improve the depth of competition at home.”
Barbados has 1 shotgun and 3 pistol quotas (athlete positions) at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) games in San Salvador in June ; and currently 4 shotgun quota positions for the 2023 Pan American Games scheduled for October in Santiago, Chile with more that can be earned at CAC.
